On June 25, 2024, Tuesday, the Malaysian Translators Association proudly received a courtesy visit from the Ministry of Communications and Information, Singapore, located in the Malaysian Translators Association office, Level 5, Wisma DPB. This official visit is part of the Translation Immersion Programme (TIP) 2024, with the aim to deepen and share experience in the best practices in media and translation at several selected departments or agencies in Malaysia.
The Singaporean delegation consists of the Department of Translation of the Ministry, which was headed by Mdm. Chew Geok Joo, Assistant Director, Mr. Subramaniam Kannapan, Senior Manager, and Mdm. Siti Ruzanna Nassir, Manager. Representatives from Malaysia who participated in the program, include Mdm. Wan Norehan Mohamed, Assistant Director of the RTM News Publishing Unit; Mdm. Haslinda Zainal, Editor of the Malaysian Language Editing Mega, BERNAMA; Mdm. Fazliatul Mohamed Isa, Assistant Director, International Relations Division, Malaysia’s Description Department; Mr. Kamarul Fazrin Zahardin, Assistant Director, National Policy Publication Division, Malaysia Information Department, as well as two secretariat officers.
After completing the visit by delegation of Singapore and the representatives of Malaysia to Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, they were cordially greeted by the Executive council members of the Malaysian Translators Association, Dr. Hasuria Che Omar, President of PPM; PM Dr. Salinah Ja’afar, Vice President of PPM; Mdm. Sa’odah Hj. Abdullah, the Honourary Secretary; and Mdm. Hajah Fatimah Zainal, the Honourary Treasurer, as well as Mdm. Sarah Atiqah Ahmad Ghazilan and other PPM secretariat officers.
The visit was initiated with a welcome speech and thank you by the PPM president for the subsequent delegation of Singaporean and Malaysian representatives to the Malaysian Translator Association as one of the agency visits in the TIP 2024 programme. The purpose of this visit is generally to get to know PPM and the role of PPM in the face of globalization and technological development in the field of translation.
In addition, discussion sessions have also been held between PPM and Singapore delegations to change views on translation and opportunities for future cooperation. Among other topics discussed are techniques and translation strategies, training and professional development for translators, and others. They are also introduced to several courses organized by PPM-DBP, such as the PPM-DBP Professional Diploma Translation Course and other short courses, as well as a range of activities of PPM that have been held annually.
This visit ended with souvenir exchange sessions as a sign of appreciation and memories. Both parties express their commitment to continue working in the field of translation in the future.
